A run in with a mouse and a broken stair does the inexplicable; it changes my DNA. I’m forced to flee my home, leaving everything and everyone I’ve ever known behind. The alternative is being hunted down because these days you're either a pure-blooded human, or you’re the enemy.

I’ve barely started running, and I’m faced with a choice. It’s an easy decision, helping people is who I am, but it also starts a chain of events that has ever-lasting consequences.

I wake up in the infirmary at Thales, the largest and most prestigious mixed-species academy in Quin-state. With a mysterious benefactor sponsoring my attendance, I’m suddenly a student again.

I know nothing about the ‘others’, but I quickly learn the supernatural beings at Thales are as prejudiced and cruel as the government back home. At every turn, teachers and students remind me of my designation. I’m a Nom, a ‘divine placeholder’, the lowest of the lows. We’re dispensable, a means to an end while the strongest beings search for their Kleis.

A drop of blood was all it took to flip my entire existence upside down, imagine what’s going to happen when I figure out how to survive in their world.
